LEARN TO RACE
If you are really enjoying your sailing after the first season, which we can almost guarantee you will... buy your own boat and enroll for the Learn to Race programme for the next season.
The following is a brief outline of the key points we will teach you in our Learn to Race programme:
- Name all parts of the boat and rig
- Tie sailing knots
- Understand weather forecasts and tides
- Know and demonstrate the Five Essentials of Sailing
- Name and show on the water, the different points of sailing
- Sail in close quarters with other boats
- Develop hiking techniques in moderate winds
- Sail backwards with control
- Follow basic sailing rules on the water
- Recover a man overboard and come alongside another boat
- Introduction to the race course
- Introduction to starting procedures
- Buoy rounding techniques
The Learn to Race Programme costs $80.00 + your Yacht club Fee (see How to Join for an outline of the fees at HBC), and is held on Thursday evenings at 5:30pm.
Once you have mastered course layouts, flag systems etc, you are ready to sail with the main fleet on Saturday afternoons... then the real fun starts.
