Heretaunga Boating Club is a dinghy sailing club located on the Petone Foreshore at the north end of Wellington Harbour. The club was originally founded in 1906 by a group of keen locals, and has been a haven for sailing mad Wellingtonians ever since.
Our club is relaxed and friendly. We have something to offer any sailor, whether you want to cruise, and afterwards enjoy our facilities, such as hot showers and a cold drink at the bar - or, if you want serious racing, there are a wide range of boat classes to choose from, each with plenty of trophies up for grabs. There is also a Rescue Boat close at hand, should the need arise.
The Petone Foreshore is an ideal playground for sailing. There is Ramp access onto a wide sandy rock free beach. Winds come from around the compass at varying strengths. A moderate southerly wind is the favourite.
Club sailing is predominantly on Saturdays, with junior training in the mornings, and racing in the afternoon. The season starts around the beginning of September, finishing around late April (see Racing Calendar).
The main classes of boat sailed at HBC are Optimist, P Class, Starling, Laser, Sunburst, and Javelin. We have a thriving Junior membership, with an excellent training programme for both junior and senior members, run by Yachting New Zealand certified coaches (see Learn to Sail).
You can't beat our view of Wellington Harbour, and the venue is often hired out to members for personal functions.
Heretaunga has held many national and international events including co-hosting the 2002-03 Tauranga and Tanner cups with Muritai Yacht club.
